Chatting Live with Rachel Caine (Morganville Vampires)

Texas native Rachel Caine, author of young adult paranormal series “Morganville Vampires,” hosted a LIVE CHAT with Houston Library patrons (and fans all over the world) on Thursday, October 11 at 3 p.m. CST.

Her lastest book, “Bitter Blood,” the 13th of possibly 15 books in the series will be released Tuesday, November 6. She also has a new young adult novel, “Prince of Shadows,” which will be released sometime in 2013. (See below the live chat questions and answers for more details.)

Caine was raised in El Paso in west Texas and currently resides in Fort Worth in northeast Texas. She has written a number of books for both young adults and adults including Weather Warden, Outcast Season, The Revivalist, as well as many anthologies and other works.

Fans from all over the world could ask her questions and hear her talk about her book. Below are some highlights of the many, many questions asked. (You can also view a recording of the previously LIVE CHAT, but be prepared for commercial breaks.)

What do you love most about being an author?

Caine said she likes to be able to do things like the live chat and being able to talk to fans. She also likes to travel.

Do you think it’s more rewarding to write for adults or teens?

Caine said she doesn’t know really, but what she has found is that the teen market is the readers are so fun and so enthusiastic and get really into the story, and this happens a little more in the teen market while the adult market is a little more reserve. But she likes both, so that’s why she writes both.

What’s the strangest thing that’s inspired you? What inspired “Morganville Vampires?”

Caine was trying to think of a way to get into the vampire thing, and a friend prompted her as she was driving at night to think of the first thing that comes to her mind. Caine said, “Well these streetlights are very far apart.”

Questions the series and when it will end.

Caine said Book 15 is the “natural end for it,” but not sure. She said ending the series will be “bittersweet.” She has lived with these characters since 2005 when she started writing the first book. She loves the characters and like writing the series. Caine said it’ll be hard to let go, but it’ll be good to end the series. She said she will have a better idea when she gets to Book 15.

Do you already know how to end the series? Are Shane and Claire going to get married? Do you like happy endings?

Caine said has has a plan drawn out for all of the books. However, funny things can happen, and things may or may not go according to plans. Regarding Shane and Clair’s possible marriage, Caine said, “It’s possible,” and she only said that because she has not even written Book 15 yet. However, she said she DOES like happy endings in books, and she thinks the series WILL have a happy ending, though she’s not sure if readers will like the ending.

Will “Prince of Shadows” be the beginning of a series?

Caine said maybe. Right now, “Prince of Shadows” is a standalone, even though Goodreads as listed it as “Prince of Shadows #1.” HOWEVER, Caine said if she can think of something more for the book, there is as possibility that it will be a series. On July 17, 2012, Caine wrote on her blog that the book is schedule for release on July 3, 2013. (See below for more details.)
