Vampire Academy movie releases trailer, hits theaters Feb 14

August 20, 2013 1 comment

vaWe all knew it was coming… Well, the Vampire Academy movie will hit theaters on February 14, 2014.

The movie has launched its Facebook page and Twitter page. The Weinstein Company has launched the official movie website, but not much has been added to the site so far.

AND the first trailer teaser was released last week (see below).

The movie, of course, it based on Richelle Mead‘s best-selling young adult book series and will be directed by Mark Walters, whose credentials include Freaky Friday, Mean Girls and The Spiderwick Chronicles.

Beautiful Creature’s Zoey Deuth will play Rose Hathaway, while Russian actor Danila Kozlovsky will have the role of the very sexy Dimitri Belikov. Lucy Fry will be Lissa Dragomir.

For you Adrian Ivashkov and Sydney Sage fans, I haven’t been able to find confirmed information on who will have those roles yet. Bummer.

Either way, maybe the trailer will hold us over until the February 14 debut date. Although, there has been mixed reviews on it too. Still, very exciting news for the VA fans.

harrison-ford-and-asa-butterfield-in-enders-gamejpg-dd443f8f4b453ad5Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment have released big news regarding the science fiction action movie, Ender’s Game, which is based on Orson Scott Card‘s award-winning young adult novel first released in 1985.

Earlier this week, the merged production companies unveiled its new official website for the film at www.if-sentinel.com. Now, filmmakers and cast members are planning to promote the film at Comic-Con International on July 18 in San Diego.

The film will star Asa Butterfield as Andrew “Ender” Wiggin, Abigail Breslin as Valentine Wiggin and Jimmy Pinchik as Peter Wiggin.

The cast includes Harrison Ford as Colonel Hyrum Graff, Viola Davis as Major Gwen Anderson

The film is scheduled for opening day on November 1.

First look at the ‘Maze’ and movie update!

Entertainment Weekly revealed the first concept image from “The Maze Runner” movie, which will begin filming on May 13!

The big-screen adaptation of James Dashner’s best-selling novel  is set to release in February 14, 2014 (what a great Valentine’s Day outing).

The image of the ever-changing maze is pretty impressive. It’s much larger than I imagined, mostly because I now know what goes in there and this photo makes it seem impossible.

And there’s more exciting news! We know the main cast! After looking up everyone on IMDB.com, I must say the cast looks good. Except for Newt, they are really close to the descriptions I had in mind (even if these kids make me feel old).

Lead character Thomas will be played by Dylan O’Brien of MTV’s “Teen Wolf”, while Alby will be portrayed by Aml Ameen.

Here’s the rest of the cast:

Gally — played by Will Poulter

Newt – who I think looks too young, will be played by Thomas Brodie-Sangster

Chuck – played by Blake Cooper

Minho – played by Ki Hong Lee

Teresa – played by Kaya Scodelario

One more fun fact: The movie is being filmed in my home state of Louisiana!

Melina Marchetta to Answer Readers’ Questions on Goodreads – Tuesday April 30

Quintana of Charyn

The sound you’re hearing is Katy running in place screaming into a pillow when she got the news (and promptly passed it on to me). Melina Marchetta, author of such young adult books as Finnikin of the Rock, On the Jellicoe Road, and The Piper’s Son, will be answering questions from Goodreads members in a special one day only discussion group coinciding with the US release of the last book in her Lumatere Chronicles trilogy, Quintana of Charyn.

Katy and I both read (and loved) Quintana when we did our reviews a few months ago for the Australian release, and I have a reading guide with details on all the books here. For those who have yet to pick up this great series, you have until Tuesday April 30 to get going, and then head over to the Goodreads discussion group in participate in the conversation.

The Selection, The 100 in Contention at the CW, Delirium Quiet at Fox in Runup to May Upfronts

April 15, 2013 Leave a comment

Every year in May, the “Big Four” US television networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX) plus The CW hold upfront presentations to showcase their new shows for the Fall season. Of course, before that, only the most successful television pilots actually make it to a fall order. This year, three shows based on young adult series are in contention, Kiera Cass’s The Selection, Kass Morgan’s upcoming The 100, both at the CW, and Lauren Oliver’s Delirium at Fox.

Pilots for all three shows have all been filmed, and now comes early word on how they’ve been received by the networks. Supposedly, Delirium has had a weaker start over at FOX, and with the the network presumably having only two free drama hours on its fall schedule (the network only programs two hours per night compared to three for the other major networks), things don’t look so great for Lauren Oliver’s dystopian at the moment. Of course, that can all change quickly, like if one of the network’s other pilots fall out of contention, or if one of FOX’s existing shows suffer a sudden and dramatic spring ratings slide that leads to cancellation.

Over at the CW, which has been suffering in the ratings lately and is likely to clean house with its existing shows, both The 100 and The Selection are looking much better. If the CW picks up five of its eight pilots as it has in seasons past, chances are good for both shows.

Finally, speaking of The Selection, sequel The Elite releases at the end of this month.

EXCERPT from The Fiery Heart (Bloodlines 4) by Richelle Mead

by Richelle Mead

That’s right Sydrian fans! Richelle Mead’s official Bloodlines page on Facebook has received over 55,000 likes, which means… TEASERS!

I’m not going to post them on the blog, since Mead made a note that she doesn’t know how long Penguin will have the teasers up, and one of our Goodreads friends got in trouble whenever she posted a chapter 1 preview from The Indigo Spell when everyone wanted more from The Golden Lily. So here are the links.

Okay, Adrian lovers, here’s a short little teaser from Adrian’s point of view. Too bad Mead didn’t give us more.

And let’s not forget the Sydney fans (cough, Mitch, cough). Here’s a bit longer excerpt from Sydney’s point of view.

As for the cover, many fans have already made their opinions clear, as have I on Goodreads, but I won’t let that discourage me from devouring the book as soon as I can get my hands on it.

The Fiery Heart is expected to be released on November 19, 2013.

The Host, The Movie – In Theaters Friday, March 29 (with Trailers)

March 23, 2013 2 comments

Well, 2013 has proven to be insanely busy, which  is quite taxing to my reading schedule, up-to-date reviews (if any) and this blog. But one of the biggest book-into-movie is coming next week, and I knew I just had to post something for those who have been living under a deeper, more isolated, out in the boonies rock, even more so than I have (ahem, Lis). Although, Goodreads has been very active about displaying the movie’s ad on the top right hand corner of the pages on its website.

There’s going to be a movie?!?

Annaalese and Rhe have been telling me I have to read the book before the movie comes out so we can go see it, so on March 11, I finally posted this on my GR:

I read the four Twilight books in a weekend when the first movie came out. It’s only taken me five years, but I have to read this before the movie comes out.

Some responded by saying they needed to, too. But I woke up with this response from this person – who shall remain nameless, ahem, Lis.

THERE IS GOING TO BE A MOVIE?!!!!!

And then…

The movie is coming out THIS month?! :0

And then…

Wait We already know the actors?!

And then…

Are there any cuties in it?? :p

So yes, there IS going to be a movie…

LOL, so yes, there IS going to be a movie, and it is coming out next week – Friday, March 29 to be exact.

It will star Saoirse Ronan as Melanie and Wanda, Max Irons as Jared, Jake Abel as Ian, as well as Diane Kruger as Wanda’s Seeker and Lacey.

And yes, I did finish the book. It was super long, but I finished it in two nights. Speaking of, I still need to write the review for that, huh? I guess overall, I would say this:

I really wish I had read this book when it came out five years ago because I would have easily given it 10 stars. I liked the concept – but then again, I’m a huge dystopian fan – and the overall story was pretty great.

However, since I started reading and review books, I have come to realize that I used to love just about every book I picked up, and I have become more analytical in processing a book and more difficult to please. I was telling Mitch last night that I miss the days of just picking up a book and enjoying the story without overthinking. I guess he’s rubbed off on me. >_<

Having said that, I felt the book was way too long, and there were parts that really dragged. And I felt the end was too conveniently packaged. (See my Goodreads review for the spoiler.) Everything ended way too perfectly. But I’m also glad that it wasn’t dragged out to a sequel and really admired Meyer for making it a standalone, which is very rare these days.

Still, I really liked the story, and I liked both Melanie and Wanda, as well as both Jared and Ian. My favorite characters, of course, were Jeb and James. I ended up giving the book 4 stars, but I’m going to keep the review short and simple, which is what I would have done if I had read it when it came out, though I probably would have given it a higher rating.

So yes, I’m excited that the movie is coming out, although I’m not sure I’ll be able to watch it opening weekend. >_< Gah! Real life sucks sometimes. Either way, I’ll be watching it soon and hopefully will be giving you my thoughts sometime this decade. 😛

Heartbreaking Divergent casting news!

March 13, 2013 1 comment

We already know that Shailene Woodley of Secret Life of the American Teenager has been cast as Beatrice “Tris” Prior in the film adaptation of the novel Divergent and that Kate Winslet has signed on (possibly as Jeanine Matthews, leader of the Erudites), but there have been some new casting announcements.

Word is Nikita actress Maggie Q will play Tori, Zoe Kravitz (daughter of Lenny Kravitz) will take on the role of Christina, and Ansel Elgort has been cast as Tris’ brother Caleb.

Sadly, rumors that Hunger Games cutie Alexander Ludwig aka Cato would join the cast as Four were not true.

He previously tweeted that he was screen testing for the movie. But later, in his tweet to celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, Ludwig said: @PerezHilton i will not be. Too similar to the hunger games but i hope the fans are happy with how the rest of the casting goes! #muchlove

Cue breaking hearts everywhere.

Emma Roberts to star in TV version of Delirium

February 7, 2013 Leave a comment

Actress Emma Roberts is set to make her return to television in the Fox pilot of Delirium, based on the bestselling YA novel by Lauren Oliver, according to several media reports.

Emma Roberts

Emma Roberts

Roberts, who previously starred in the Nickelodeon series Unfabulous in 2004-2007, will play the lead role of Lena, a 17-year-old girl who lives in a society where love is illegal and the government removes an individual’s ability to love through a medical procedure. Of course, Lena then falls in love with someone who hasn’t yet had the cure.

This might just be the big break this actress needs to establish herself and come out of her famous aunt’s shadow since her biggest movie titles seem to include minor parts in Valentine’s Day and Scream 4.

I’ve also heard rumors that the pilot episode will cover all of book one of the series, and will stray from the original plot. Although I’m not very familiar with Roberts’ acting skills, I’m interested to see if she can pull this off and not end up like other teen dramas that start off with little known actresses, which are hard to watch.

The pilot is set to be released in the Fall of 2013.

2013 Newbery and Printz Award Winners Announced

February 6, 2013 Leave a comment

One of things that happens at the annual American Library Association’s Midwinter Meeting is the selection of the Newbery and Printz Award Winners for best contributions to American Children’s and Young Adult’s literature respectively.

The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate

The One and Only Ivan
by Katherine Applegate

This year, the Newbery Medal (predictably) goes to Katherine Applegate’s (of Animorphs fame) The One and Only Ivan. There’s been a lot of buzz about this story told from the point of view of a performing gorilla, so I can’t say I’m surprised on the win. From past experience reading Animorphs and Everworld, Applegate certainly knows how to write complicated moral issues that resonate with a younger audience, so it seems like a well deserved victory.

In Darkness by Nick Lake

In Darkness
by Nick Lake

The Printz Award this year goes to Nick Lake’s In Darkness, which was quite a dark horse (fewer than 200 ratings on Goodreads as of this writing) with Elizabeth Wein’s Code Name Verity seeming like the runaway frontrunner. Then again, a book connecting a fifteen year old in present day Haiti with Toussaint Louverture, the nineteenth century Haitian hero, with shades of magical realism definitely sounds like the kind of book that would win.

Strangely enough, neither Katy nor I have read any of the winners or Honors books, although I had planned to read Terry Pratchett’s Dodger and Katy assures me Code Name Verity was on her radar. Maybe we’ll read Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe together for kicks?

For a full list of winners, see the Newbery here and the Printz here.
